Our History

The Chocorua Public Library has deep roots in our community, beginning as a small subscription-based library founded by local families and dedicated neighbors. Over the years, with the support of the Bowditch and James families and other early benefactors, it grew into the beloved institution it is today—privately funded, yet open and welcoming to all.

This category shares stories of our library’s journey, from its founding members to its unique connections, including ties to Hadley Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway’s former wife. Here you’ll find articles and insights that celebrate the people, traditions, and milestones that shaped our library.
